How to Perform An At-Home Scoliosis Test
Scoliosis treatment for children is essentially like a clock race.
If you detect it early, a scoliosis specialist can help with corrective exercise and offer non-invasive therapy. Unfortunately, most cases go undiagnosed until the curve of the spine has progressed and advanced. This makes effective conservative treatment more challenging and could lead to more invasive treatment like surgery.
Because of COVID, many children are not attending school in person. Most schools provide scoliosis screenings and unfortunately, children are missing out on this service☹
There is good news! The scoliosis screen is simple enough that you can perform it at home.
Here are the 4 steps to follow:
Step #1: THE FORWARD BEND
Have the individual stand with arms extended with palms together as they bend at the waist. As they bend look at their back to see if one side is raised higher than the other at their ribs or hips?
Step #2 THE POSTURE CHECK
Postural changes are one of the most common visual signs of scoliosis. Observe the posture in the standing position and notice if one shoulder is higher than the other or if the hips are imbalanced.
Step #3 THE CLOTHES CHECK
Sometimes the fit of clothing can be a sign of scoliosis. Look for uneven hemlines at shirt sleeve or pant leg. Take note if bra straps or dress straps slip off one shoulder and not the other.
Step #4 THE GAIT TEST
Observe walking. Look for limping, one leg being shorter than the other or if the body tilts to one side.
If you notice imbalances from the tests above, give your pediatrician a call right away. If you or your child would like to be screened for FREE, I offer a complimentary scoliosis screening! Check it out here!
